A Platform for Island Music

A City Calls performance heats up

Seconds after walking into the Wight Rock Bar in Ryde, on a quite Wednesday evening, my ears prick up: ‘and yes we will be doing a mass ensemble version of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing.’ This could be an interesting evening, I thought.

Alas, there was no Journey. But what did ensue was an evening of light hearted, fun, well played music thanks to the students and tutors of Platform One, the island’s fast growing, non-profit organisation that, in association with the Isle of Wight College and Chichester University, run BTEC music courses and a foundation degree in Commercial Music. The Wight Rock Bar is where you can see some of the fruits of their labours, giving the students an intimate, professional environment to exhibit their skills in both playing, singing and setting up for a gig.

The Wight Rock Bar itself is often overlooked by the rowdy hoards of Ryde’s weekend drinkers (perhaps a good thing), and most undeservedly so as the ‘microvenue’ has a remarkably welcoming atmosphere, owners Shaun and Debbie Newnham offering cheap drinks and a cosy setting coupled with a clear passion for music (the walls are lined with some quite interesting rock and roll memorabilia).

To top off the night Platform One’s tutors take to the stage with the students in the form of ‘The Project’, blasting such tunes as Jamiroquai’s ‘Canned Heat’ and generally showcasing the skills and talents Platform One have to offer.

Look out this winter for the long list of acts gracing the Wight Rock bar’s steps; there’s plenty on offer.
