LAU

What are you up to at the moment?

We’re Just back from our tour of Holland and England, and about to release a new EP with London producer Adem, out 11th April, and working on music for Lau and The Northern Sinfonia (orchestra) to be performed at The Sage, Gateshead on 11th June.

How are you finding your recent brisk shove into the limelight?

Totally brilliant thanks.

How did LAU form?

The three of us have known each other for a long time, from various bands in the folk scene, then we started playing as three duos, and one trio just seemed to make more sense.

How would you describe your music?

Modern folk music, the music is all written by the band and has traditional instruments and elements, but we are keen on exploration and improvisation.

Is your music in your blood? Where have the band’s talents derived from?

I don’t know that I believe in “natural talent” but all our parents are musical, and I think that makes a difference. We all played a lot of music when we were young.

Would you say that LAU has hit a genre niche which looks to become more mainstream in the future?

Folk music is blessed with never having been very trendy, that aids its longevity.  It is brilliant that so many people are into to folk music right now, but we’re not expecting to make the charts in the near future!

Will you be performing anything in particular at the Quay Arts when you gig there later on in March?

Last year we made a CD with Karine Polwart (amazing Scottish singer/songwriter) called “Evergreen” we are gigging some of the songs from that, and loving it.

Where else can we see you performing this year?

Glastonbury! Bring on the wellies.
