Start mowing your lawn.
Now is the time to start mowing your lawn. Little and often is the right way to go. Keep the blades on a high setting and cut about once a week. As the grass grows faster during the good Spring and Summer weather, you will need to reset the blades to a lower setting and cut up to twice a week if necessary.
If there is a prolonged dry spell, you should mow less frequently, so allowing the grass to grow a bit longer. If the warmer weather persists then refrain from using feed as this will promote lots of new growth.
Aerating your lawn
Pricking your lawn is a useful technique in Spring and Summer as it allows water to get to the roots. In the inch or so directly below the surface of most turf there is an accumulation of dead matter and compacted soil. Pricking helps to break through this layer. It is best to do this before feeding or watering. Choose a day when the soil is already moist and make even pricks into the turf about ½ to 1 ½ inch deep. You can purchase aerators from your local garden centre or contact a gardening company for advice.
Tidying Edges
Tidying lawn edges keeps the grass neat and helps to prevent it from spreading into flower beds or borders. After mowing, trim any grass that overhangs. Edges should be re-cut each Spring. A handy tip for cutting curves is to cut using an old piece of hosepipe as a guide.
