Yoga – Exercise for the Body and the Mind By Jenny Andrews-Smith, Yoga Teacher at the West Bay Country Club

This ancient art brings wellness as much as physical training. It can rejuvenate mind and spirit by relieving daily tensions, eliminating anxiety and reducing stress. It allows you to discover your inner self, be aware of what is actually going on in your mind and clear it of all that accumulated clutter that is part of modern life. You can take control of yourself and in the process improve concentration, relax away your worries and generally achieve a tranquil state of wellbeing.  At the same time you can improve your flexibility, muscle tone and cardio-vascular system.

At the West Bay Country we offer a variety of yoga classes so that there really is something for everyone whether they are of the younger or older generation, fit or not so fit.

On Monday night we offer Hatha yoga which focuses on posture and breathing in order improve balance and increase flexibility.  Although this style of yoga is quite dynamic, it can be undertaken by students at any level.

Our Yoga for Health is a gentle to moderate class that is particularly ideal, although not exclusively, for those people lead an active lifestyle. If you want to learn how to relax your the body while taking part in sport, increase your stamina when playing tennis, improve your lung capacity for swimming and walking, strengthen your legs for skiing – then this could be the class for you.

If you are looking for pure relaxation then Restorative yoga might be the way to go. Its combination of gentle exercise, held postures, breath control and meditation makes it suitable for all levels. It is perfect for those who are returning to yoga after a break or wish to gently unwind from a hectic week.

We also offer Ashtanga one of the oldest forms of yoga.  Providing a powerful workout, it is probably the most dynamic and intense form of yoga and therefore previous experience of yoga is essential.

PIC CAPTIONS

Posture 1 is a version of Eka Pada Sirsasana - one foot to head posture! translated, it is practiced to increase back and neck strength, and to lengthen the hamstrings and thighs. Increases abdominal strength, and hip flexibility.

Posture 2 is Natarajasana - Lord of the Dance, - "the posture is vigorous and beautiful and dedicated to Siva, Lord of the Dance who is the fountain and source of yoga" (from an exert in Light on Yoga) a big favourite of mine.  This posture encourages grace, and balance, it tones and strengthens the legs.  The shoulder blades can be opened into full movement and the chest will expands fully.  All of the joints in the vertebral column benefit from this posture.
