IOW To Host Queen's Diamond Jubilee Event in 2012

  • 13-01-2012

“Quture and Appley Leisure” are pleased to announce a 3 day event as part of the national celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This official event will be hosted by Ryde in and around Appley Park for the whole Isle of Wight on 2nd-4th June 2012.

We will mix vintage nostalgia with a modern twist. The Coronation Year was 1953, when the nation was encouraged to be thrifty and entertainment was simple and fun! Some of the proposed entertainments are based around the holiday camp hey-days and current trend for Vintage revival. We visualize an exciting series of activities over three days of family fun and evening entertainment. It will be inclusive; fully accessible and community based using local skills and produce.

The whole event will have a 50’s themed vintage site decor, sumptuous silk flags & bunting, installations, atmospheric tree lighting, Dj’s, carnival walkabouts, musicians and entertainers, bouncy castles, magicians.

Some of the key activities include the Parade, the “Big Lunch”, “Jubilee Walk”, a fireworks finale spectacular and the Beacon being lit as one of 2012 around the UK.

Other entertainments include Black Tie & Tiaras Ball, a vintage 50’s Lambretta night and themed bars including “The Balmoral Bar” and “The Knees Up Mother Brown Tent”. VIP Bar, a large beach bandstand for live music including a Queen tribute band and local musicians.

A processional parade “Cool Brittania” will take place through Ryde Town with marching bands & veterans. This will include Victorian Era costumes provided by Ryde Historic Society , a Carnival procession by Brenda Livingstone and a Vintage Car Rally organised by Mary  Searle.

A commemorative sculpture will be commissioned for an island artist as a lasting legacy of this event.

The Appley Park area will have various activities taking place for family fun, workshops, health, fitness, hula, circus skills, dance, music platforms and theatrical entertainment.

On the beach there will be sandcastle competitions, a sand sculpture, 50’s style soccer, old fashioned races, egg and spoon, sack races and tug o war.  There will also be a music bandstand, a cinema with retro movies and a hog roast.

 God save the Queen !
